Role Play: Skippy's Kids Store - Scene Four / With Pictures
(Three O'clock in the afternoon. Located in a small planning office that is connected to Mr. Swan's main office where scenes one, two, and three took place. This scene opens up with Mr. Swan holding in his hand a cup of hot tea, which he had just taken from the hand of a Japanese female employee. Mr. Swan and Maki again are sitting at a desk, across from one another now. This room is quite bare compared to the room where he keeps his main desk. The desk in this room is somewhat bare, having only a box of tissue on one corner, and a picture frame, a plant, and the remains of his lunch spread out on the other corner nearest the wall. Other than this, the room is quite bare. Mr. Swan looks in the direction, which the employee who brought the tea is departing.)

Mr. Swan: Thank you. Thank you very much. (Still holding the tea in his hand, he says one last thank you, only this time in Japanese, then sets the tea on the desk that sits between him and Maki.) Maki, do you want some tea?

Maki: No thank you (Maki holds up her hands just above the desk, palms facing outward towards Mr. Swan as she again repeats her "No thank you" in a polite sounding voice).

Mr. Swan: You're more than welcome. Are you sure? Because, I don't drink tea. I drink coffee (emphasizing the word coffee as if to distinguish a difference), but I don't drink tea. I don't like the taste. But they always bring it to me! Every day it seems like, when I'm having my lunch (pointing to his lunch that he has to his other side), they bring me tea. I don't know, they must think that I like tea or something. I just don't understand. It just sits there and gets cold, and then I dump it out. I don't know why. Do you know why they bring me tea every day?

Maki: It's Japanese custom. The newest female employee always brings tea to the manager at three o'clock in the afternoon.

Mr. Swan: At three? (Looking at his watch) Wow! It is three o'clock. I didn't even realize that. That's really interesting. Oh well, if you don't want it either, I'm just going to put it over there (setting the tea aside near the end of the desk). If you do want it, feel free to help yourself. Well, I'm just finishing up my lunch here. Here, do you want one of these? These are really good. Here, have one.

Maki: (Again, Maki brings her hands up from her lap, holding her palms out toward the cracker as she replies.) No thank you.

Mr. Swan: No, no, please. You know, I'm eating in front of you and I would feel really bad if you did not have something. Go ahead and take one (holding out his bag containing the crackers for Maki to reach in and grab one). Just go ahead and reach in and grab one. They're really good! (eating one of them with one hand now as he still holds the bag out for Maki) You got it? That's good.

Maki: (After Maki took one cracker, it broke off and fell on the floor. Maki then maneuvers in her chair, reaches down and picks it up.)

Mr. Swan: Awe. That's ok though, I've got another one here (grabbing his bag of crackers and now setting them in front of Maki). Here, here's the garbage. (Maki is still reaching for the cracker that fell on the floor. Meanwhile, her boss slides the garbage can with his foot under the desk to the other side for Maki to dispose of the cracker once she is able to pick it up from the floor. He moves the garbage can all the way under the desk with his foot, sliding it all the way under the desk while Maki is bending over to pick up the cracker.)

Maki: (Disposing of the cracker into the garbage can, Maki puts her hand towards the garbage can as if to move it back, but does not move it anywhere, as if not quite knowing what to do with it now. She then takes her mind off of that, and reaches carefully with her other hand into the bag for another cracker.)

Mr. Swan: (Finishing off another cracker, he begins to sniffle. Then, rubbing his nose as if it has an itch or a tickle. He then begins a short case of the sniffles again.) I seem to be getting a cold. (He reaches for a tissue from the box on the corner of the desk and procedes to blow his nose. He leans back in his chair for the first blow.) I think maybe it's allergies too. (He finishes blowing his nose with his elbows on his desk.) It could be allergies that I've got.

(Maki still continues to nod with practically ever sentence that her boss says. Meanwhile, Mr. Swan takes his tissue and tosses it into his empty luch sack. Then he begins to pick up the rest of his wrappers and other garbage items from his completed lunch.)

Maki: (As the garbage can still remains on Maki's side of the desk) Manager, may I throw away your garbage?

Mr. Swan: (Puzzled) Throw away my garbage? No, just kick the garbage can back under for me. Go ahead and kick it under. (Both lean over to look under the desk. Maki now pushes the garbage can under the desk with her hand. As the can gets to the other side, Mr. Swan brings it the rest of the way to his side by using his foot to grab it and slide it.) Thanks (while throwing the garbage in the the waste can). Now, as we were talking about earlier...(grabbing the remaining bag of crackers and then panning the desk to locate where he had placed his bottle of water. He grabs his bottle of water, unscrews the lid all while finishing his discussion with Maki)...I want to finish up here (brief pause) by telling you some of the (brief pause) future goals after...(he takes a drink of his water and the scene ends).
